This book is fantastic, a very good read indeed, if you are interested in this kind of music. I have permission from the author to show a couple of pages in which I and my erstwhile band members from the Thunderclap Newman Band are mentioned. Please see the line -up of the band, below.
It was 20 years ago – but not today – that Thunderclap Newman v 2.0 kicked off. The original band had a No1 hit in July 1969 with “Something In The Air”. I met Andy in early 1985 in London and over the years we became friends. I wanted to revive the band along with David Buckley a friend and musical partner from the days when we were an acoustic duo called East Meets West. However, it took me nearly 20 years to convince Andy that this would be a worthwhile project. He was suspicious of the music industry and you couldn’t blame him. Countless musicians got burnt.
I cooked him endless goulash meals , which he loved and David and got the rest of the group together – a nice international outfit.
Andy ‘Thunderclap’Newman on keyboards, soprano saxophone and various other wind instruments.
David Buckey (US) on vocals.
István Etiam (HUN) on rhythm guitar.
Stefanos Tsourelis (GR) on lead guitar.
Brian Jackson (UK) on bass guitar
Antonio Spano (I) on drums.
We lasted 5 years, played memorable gigs and I for one, feel privileged to have played with Andy who was a consummate musician. I learned a lot from him. He died in 2016 and can’t believe that it’s almost ten years since his passing.
