Sad news reached me the other day. Gordon Thrussell, my friend and sound engineer died on Sunday, 5 May 2024. This was a real shock since I saw him only 2 weeks ago, before I flew to Budapest. He was well known in music circles in Kent. For the last 40 years musicians flocked to his recording studio in Ashford.
He was an old school engineer with a pair of very trained ears and sound technical knowledge of recording and the recording studio. Not surprising if you know that he started his career as an electronics engineer in the early 70s at CERN near Geneva, the very place where Tim Berners-Lee invented/developed the World Wide Web. After he moved back to the UK, he built his recording studio where I recorded all my released output – bar one song which was done in Vienna. I include photos of my EPs and LP, recorded at Gordon’s studio. The ‘Butterfly Dreamer’ LP was my latest project, which was finished in early 2023. I was the last artist he worked with and later that year he closed his recording studio for good. Gordon was a lovely human being and he was a great engineer to work with. He had tons of patience, a wealth of experience and I (almost) always followed his advice. Because he had a large live room, he worked with choirs, brass bands and large ensembles. We shall not see the likes of him again and I cherish the privilege of having been able to record with him. My condolences go to his family.
